Time to Get Back to Fibre......

It's the 1st of August and there are subtle signs of the slow change from summer to fall. While still very warm during the sun-filled days, the evenings cool nicely and it's quite cool in the mornings. Our alarm goes at 5:30 and it is still dark when I shut it off now.
And the change is inducing me to play more with my fibre. I've been dyeing some wool tops and I've got some knitting on the needles.
Today's dyepot.  Some blue-faced leicester in turkey red.
Yesterday's dyepot .  More blue-faced leicester in twilight blue. I think is such a pretty colour.
A pair of socks in hand-dyed  millspun wool/mohair .
Handknit wool socks are always a popular item on my table at events. I''ve got to get busy, busy, busy to get a few pairs done before the frosts come.

Have a good one!

  1. I hope we get together for a crafts day soon! Love the color of the socks. I just got a bunch of mohair when the mill closed, might do some drum carding and see if I can make a pair of socks that I wont wear through. Do you 3 ply sock yarn?

  2. It depends. :-) The stuff I'm using is millspun. The good folks at Wellington Fibres suggested I have it 3-plied. I'd told them my plans for a sock yarn with mohair instead of nylon. But when I spin my own sock yarn I just 2 ply. But I try to incorporate a strong fibre such as Lincoln or mohair. Satan has a pair of pure Lincoln that were the first pair I spun & knit. 10 yrs ago. They are finally starting to wear thin in the soles.

  4. That's hilarious! Satan! I don't have the patience to do 3 singles. I did get a whole bunch of mohair before the mill closed, so I'll try maybe a 60/40 blend with fleece that I got from Carolyn Turner. Couple years ago.

I did get a huge bag of nylon too, might add a little to be safe. I hate it when socks wear out.

Hope you are having a great summer. Too hot for mu liking...
